5 Pine Tar Tricks for Baseball the Pros Don’t Tell You
You know, in baseball, there are some things you just don’t learn until you get into pro ball. For example, I remember just after being drafted, I went up to my pitching coach and said, “Hey, Coach…” and he cuts me off and goes, “Who are you calling coach? My name is Wally.”
Another weird one? They call bullpen sessions “sidelines” for whatever reason. But what we’re going to talk about today is far more useful: five pine tar tricks for baseball that the pros use when applying pine tar and other grip enhancements that they would never tell you. But I’m spilling the beans today.

Trick #1: Apply It Thick, But Keep It Clean
When it comes to pine tar, it’s all about personal preference. Personally, I like my pine tar like I like my women… thick and a bowl of oatmeal. But at the same time, I like those clean lines.
The Pro Trick: Before applying your thick and sticky pine tar, be sure to tape off the section of your bat that you’re going to use. When you remove the tape, you’ve got some nice, clean lines. This is the “Straight Tack and Feed” style sticky icky, not those watered-down, bottled-up fake pine tars sold at your local sporting goods store .
Pro Tip: A little goes a long way. You can always add more, but it’s hard to take it off in the middle of a game .
The Rule: Remember to not go higher than 18 inches from the bottom of the bat. You can always check to see if you’re okay by laying the bat by home plate, which is 17 inches wide, so you’ve got an inch of wiggle room .
Trick #2: Add Some Rosin to Get the Right Consistency
Like I said, pine tar is all about personal preference. When using pine tar, rosin can help you find the perfect feel for your stick.
The Pro Trick: After applying your tar, try hitting it right after with some rosin to get that perfect amount of sticky. But make sure you are using quality rosin. This is a natural tree rosin. Listen to that crunch .
Why it works: The rosin bag is used to enhance grip and absorbs moisture, giving you a light, tacky texture that doesn’t feel like glue .
Trick #3: Use a Gel
Maybe you don’t like them thick like I do and you’d prefer to use a big league-style gel pine tar.
The Pro Trick: Grab your pine tar rag, load it up, and apply it to your bat in the desired area. A lot of guys will put a good amount right above the handle and then a smaller amount where their hands go. This gives them initial stick on the hands, and they can grab four more above during their at-bat if needed. This one doesn’t even need any rosin because it already has it in there, unless it’s a really hot day, then you might want to throw a little extra rosin on there to get it perfect .
Trick #4: Get Small with Your Stick ‘Em
This mini rag and mini tin are great if you’re swinging a mini bat, or if you just want a convenient way to carry your grip with you.
The Pro Trick: The great thing about the mini rag and tin is they’re perfectly sized to carry with you or just throw in your ball bag for a quick fix. I’m just wondering why someone would need their sticky grip to be clear… I think that’s all I’m going to say about that one.
Trick #5: Use a Stick for Your Stick
Maybe you’re not about that tar life. Maybe you prefer a premium grip stick instead.
The Pro Trick: A grip stick is quick, easy to apply, easy to carry, and maintain. It’s the number one pine tar alternative in the big leagues. You just cut open your stick and apply the desired amount by rubbing up and down nice and easy where you like it. Some guys even like to put a little on the knob. It’ll improve your grip instantly, so you don’t go throwing your bat around the yard like some kind of rookie. Grip stick is by far the desired choice on cold days, too .
BONUS Tip #6: Keep Your Bat Clean
Now here’s a little bonus tip for you guys: you got to keep your bat clean. Nobody wants another George Brett “Pine Tar Incident.” Once you can actually feel a weight difference on your bat, it’s probably time to clean some of that old tar off.
How to Clean Your Bat: It’s simple. You just grab your bat scraper. Use the beveled edge to pull up and the straight edge to go down. Make sure you’ve got a towel underneath though, because unless you’re in the show and tipping your clubhouse big bucks, your mom is probably gonna whip your butt if you leave pine tar shavings all over the house .
